Bridget: Well one of the basic goals of Common Sense Parenting is to give parents teaching tools. One of them is to be able to teach children what they need to know, so using social skills to teach children. So, we give that to parents. The other is being able to give parents ways to correct children in a positive way and then dealing with out of control behavior in a very calm and purposeful way so they can return to teaching. The class is made up of a very interactive way of learning, because people learn by doing and not just by us talking. So, we will do a review with parents where they will begin to talk to us about what happened at home and then we teach them a skill, we let them see it on a video, we have them practice it several, several times before they go home. Then we do a summary where they tell us what they learned and how they are going to put it into action at home.
Participant: As each week went by there was something more to add. And, I implemented all of the strategies and was very, very happy with the results.
Bridget: What parents learn from the Common Sense Parenting program is so much that I can't put into really the words I want to tell you. But the two or three things that I can tell you that they get is a is a sense of being able to connect again with your kids. Being able to really talk to their kids and really listen to them. And to know that there is a program out there to give them the tools and not just the tools for today, but as their kids learn and grow and as they change, to their grandchildren and generations on and on. I think that's a wonderful gift to give any family. To break cycles and to know that by doing so that you have changed them forever.
