Once again, this year, Boys Town staff volunteered at the annual Pell Bridge Run and was designated as one of the non-profit organizations to receive financial support. This year’s race was a little more special as 14-year-old Ben Buonanno ran and represented Boys Town. Ben’s mother Liana has served on the Boys Town New England Board and along with her husband Rob and 11-year-old son Thomas have been very supportive of the Boys Town mission for many years. In his first-ever road race Ben finished 150th out of 3,364 runners and 10th in the under 19 age group. But Ben’s story is much more than just finishing the race. We spoke to Ben after he crossed the finish line.
How did you first hear about Boys Town?
I first learned about Boys Town when I was told by my parents that we were going to fill Christmas lists for kids who live there. At first, I knew nothing about it, but I thought it would be fun to buy presents. I was so surprised to see what was on their lists: there were things like board games, a book, snacks, and even underwear. It made me realize how different people’s needs can be small and mean so much to someone else.
What do you remember about your first visit to Boys Town? My first visit was in the summer and it’s something I’ll never forget. The kids were so excited that someone came to spend time with them. I remember being asked, “You’re here just to meet us?” I could tell that they felt seen and cared about. Being there was amazing. I loved hearing everyone’s personal stories and ambitions. When we were leaving, some of them thought the toys we brought were for us to take back and offered to help carry them to our car. I got to tell them, more than once, because they couldn’t believe that what we brought as presents were all for them. Seeing how surprised and excited they were was one of the best parts. Something that seemed insignificant to me was life changing to someone else.
Have you learned anything about Boys Town over the last several years from your visits?
I’ve learned that Boys Town is more than just a place: it’s a real home for kids who don’t have one. The people there really care and help the kids feel supported and safe. It taught me how important it is to give your time and kindness, not just physical objects.
Why did you decide to participate in the Pell Bridge Run?
I was excited to find out how I would hold up in a real race. When I learned that I could run for a charity I was even more excited because I could represent Boys Town.
How was your first experience running in the Pell Bridge Run?
My first experience running the Pell Bridge Run was amazing. I really enjoyed passing people and seeing all the people cheering for me at the end.
You have a summer home in Rhode Island, but you live in New York City. Talk a little bit about your daily schedule.
I walk to school every day. After classes, I usually have cross country, wrestling, or track practice, and sometimes I try to play piano for a few minutes when I get home. I don’t have much free time because by the time I finish dinner and homework, it’s already pretty late.
What is it like spending summers in Rhode Island?
Spending summers in Rhode Island is one of my favorite times of the year. I like riding my scooter around the neighborhood, being by the water, and working at the winery (Ben’s parents’ Rob and Liana own Gooseneck Vineyards in North Kingstown). It’s much more relaxing than New York City and I get to spend more time outside with my family and friends.
Is running something you enjoy, and are you on the cross country or track team at school?
Yes, running is one of my favorite things to do, and I’m on both the cross country and track teams at school. I enjoy running because it gets me into better shape and it lets me see how far I've come, from not even being able to run a single lap around a track field to placing in races.
Do you like or play any other sports?
I like hockey, skiing, and wrestling. I’ve gone to hockey camps in the summer and enjoy being part of a team. I’ve also done jiu-jitsu and kickboxing and hope to get back into them soon.
What is your favorite school subject/class and why?
My favorite subject is math because it’s logical and I like finding patterns and solving problems. I also really enjoy robotics and coding because I like building and programming.
