This September, as communities across the country observe Suicide Prevention Month, Boys Town Louisiana is stepping forward to raise awareness and offer life-saving support. Executive Director Rashain Carriere Williams shares why this issue is more urgent than ever—and how families in Greater New Orleans can take action today.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people ages 10 to 34. Behind every statistic is a child who needs to feel seen and a family searching for answers. Suicide Prevention Month is a call to turn awareness into action—by asking directly, listening with compassion, and connecting to help.
In 2025 alone, Boys Town’s National Hotline has supported over 46,500 contacts, including 16,500 youth—7,600 of whom experienced suicidal ideation. Crisis counselors have intervened in more than 270 suicide-in-progress situations. These numbers underscore the power of timely, compassionate support.
Boys Town offers a range of services to meet families where they are:
- 24/7 National Hotline: Call 800-448-3000 or text VOICE to 20121
- Behavioral Health Clinics: Therapy, psychiatry and parent coaching; available in persona and via telehealth
- Higher Levels of Care: Inpatient, residential treatment and Family Homes
- Prevention Resources: School programs parent training and tolls available online
In 2024, Boys Town Louisiana served more than 7,600 children and families, providing both immediate and long-term support across Greater New Orleans.
If you're worried about your child:
- Ask directly if they're thinking about suicide, it can reduce the risk
- Secure or remove lethal means like medications or firearms
- Connect to help immediately by calling Bots Town at 800-448-3000, text VOICE to 20121 or call 988
“You don’t need perfect words—just a plan,” says Williams. “Ask, listen, and connect your child to help. Prevention works best when families, schools, and communities come together. Boys Town Louisiana is here to be a lifeline.”
