Volunteering Inspires Boys Town Youth to Walk for Charity

Boys Town New England staff and youth from our Family Home Program volunteered at registration and racing bib pick-up for the Citizens Pell Bridge Run/Walk, of which Boys Town New England was selected as a charitable partner by the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority.

Seeing people of all ages coming in that were registered to run or walk piqued the interest of the teens who volunteered.  Allison Roberts, the Assistant Family Teacher who accompanied them, encouraged all to participate in the run/walk and offered to escort the group along the way.

When Riley Huntington, Family Home Program Director, stopped in to check on how the volunteer event was going, the kids told her they were interested in taking part in the run/walk for charity that upcoming Sunday.  Riley responded that she'd do whatever she had to do to make it happen for them.

Allison and Riley both registered, then got the youth entered as participants as well.  This meant rising early to run or walk the four-mile race event.  Everyone registered had to be in Newport for the 6:15 AM shuttle to the starting line in Jamestown.

The kids represented Boys Town New England so well with the volunteer duties they performed, which included greeting registrants and kindly getting them their race bibs and T-shirts.  Early Sunday morning, they made their ascent up Newport's scenic Pell Bridge, walking four miles for Boys Town New England.

We are so proud of our kids' volunteer efforts and their desire to support and participate in this wonderful event!
