Education and Empowerment Help Bane Family Take First Steps Toward a Healthier Future

Referred to Boys Town’s SafeCare program due to developmental concerns with their youngest child, the Bane family faced a troubling challenge. Their child was not yet walking and showed signs of being underdeveloped for his age. After an initial assessment, it was determined that persistent skin irritation was likely contributing to the child’s limited mobility.

Through the SafeCare Health Module, Boys Town specialists worked with the family to provide education and support focused on managing the child’s condition and encouraging regular medical follow-ups. Early in the process, the mother expressed gratitude for the guidance she was receiving and noted that she was learning how to better assess her children’s health needs at home—checking temperatures and observing symptoms before deciding whether a trip to the doctor was necessary.

A turning point came during a session focused on hygiene and skincare. The mother had been bathing her child daily, unaware that frequent bathing could worsen skin irritation. SafeCare staff explained how young children’s skin is often more sensitive and susceptible to dryness. With this new information, the mother adjusted the routine, leading to noticeable improvement in the child’s condition.

Recently, the family shared a milestone moment—a video of their youngest child walking unassisted. The mother credited the SafeCare program with giving her the confidence and tools she needed to support her children’s health. With this progress, the family chose to exit services and was guided on next steps should additional support be needed in the future.

The Bane family’s story is a powerful example of how education, compassionate guidance and consistent engagement can lead to lasting, life-changing outcomes. Through programs like SafeCare, Boys Town continues to strengthen families by empowering parents with knowledge and support.
