In May, Boys Town Nevada took an exciting trip more than 450 miles north to see its growing School Support Program in action. Executive Director John Etzell and Scott Mitchell (Program Quality) visited schools in Elko and Winnemucca, connecting with students, staff and community leaders, seeing the program’s impact up close.
The visit showcased the momentum behind the program, made possible through a 2024 U.S. Department of Education Full-Service Community Schools Grant in partnership with Communities in Schools. Now serving three schools in northern Nevada, the program is already gaining interest from others in the region.
Etzell shared, “We are thrilled to update you on our expansion of programs to Elko and Winnemucca. As you recall, we now have our School Support Program serving students at three schools in northern Nevada. Our team has integrated well with the school staff and overall, the schools have seen a reduction in office referrals and an increase of kindness in the classroom.”
During the visit, Etzell spent time with Elko Mayor Reece Keener learning about the challenges youth in Elko face daily. This will help inform future program opportunities in Elko. Mayor Keener invited Etzell to present school data to the city council, which we look forward to attending.
Together, we’re expanding opportunities, strengthening schools and helping students thrive, no matter the distance.
