Boys Town Experts: Why January Is the Best Time to Reset Screen Rules for Kids and Teens

What Parents Should Know About Screen Time and Kids’ Mental Health

Boys Town, Neb. (January 9, 2026) — As families settle into the new year, many parents are rethinking how much time their children spend on screens and for good reason. According to Boys Town behavioral health and education experts, January is one of the most effective times to reset screen habits and establish healthier boundaries for kids and teens.

“During the holidays, routines often go out the window, and screen time tends to increase,” said Dr. Christopher Blank, licensed psychologist at Boys Town Behavioral Health Center. “By January, families are ready for structure again, which makes this an ideal moment to reset expectations around technology.”

How Screen Overuse Affects Behavior and Sleep

Excessive screen time has been linked to increased irritability, difficulty concentrating, sleep disruption, and heightened anxiety in children and adolescents. Blue light exposure can interfere with natural sleep cycles, while constant notifications and social media use keep kids’ brains in a heightened state of alert.

“When kids aren’t sleeping well, it shows up as behavior challenges, emotional outbursts, and academic struggles,” Dr. Blank added. “Reducing screen use, especially before bedtime, can make a noticeable difference in just a few weeks.”

Setting Boundaries Without Power Struggles

Experts emphasize that successful screen resets aren’t about punishment, they’re about consistency and communication. Families are encouraged to:

    • Set clear, age-appropriate limits together
    • Create tech-free times, such as during meals and before bed
    • Model healthy screen habits as parents
    • Focus on routines rather than rigid rules

“When boundaries are predictable and calmly enforced, kids are less likely to push back,” Dr. Blank said. “Consistency builds trust and reduces daily power struggles.”

Social Media Pressure in the New Year

January can also intensify social media pressure for teens, as many compare themselves to peers’ curated “new year, new me” posts. This comparison can impact self-esteem and increase feelings of anxiety or inadequacy.

“Teens are especially vulnerable to online comparison at the start of the year,” said Dr. Blank. “Encouraging open conversations about social media, self-worth, and unrealistic online portrayals can help kids develop healthier digital habits.”

    Small Changes, Big Impact

Boys Town experts recommend starting small. Even modest screen reductions can lead to improved sleep, better moods, and stronger family connections.

“A digital reset doesn’t have to be perfect,” Dr. Blank said. “What matters most is helping kids build a balanced relationship with technology that supports their mental and emotional well-being.”
