Boys Town Louisiana Executive Director Rashain Carriere recently shared tips for helping children manage back-to-school anxiety and feel more confident as they head into a new school year. From starting a new grade or school to meeting new teachers and adjusting to new routines, back-to-school season can bring a lot of changes for children.
In the interview, Rashain discusses ways parents can help their children prepare for these transitions before the first day arrives. Parents can talk with their kids about what to expect, pay attention to changes in their mood or behavior that could signal they’re struggling and even role-play different first-day scenarios. Walking through situations they may encounter at school can help children feel more prepared and confident.
Once school starts, parents can also remind children to use calming strategies, such as taking deep breaths when they feel nervous. It can also help to identify a trusted person at school, such as a teacher or counselor, who they can turn to if they need someone to talk to.
