More than a century after Father Edward J. Flanagan opened the doors of Boys Town to children in need, his unwavering belief that every child deserves love, opportunity and hope continues to guide our mission.
This past weekend, Boys Town was honored to receive the Father Edward J. Flanagan Human Dignity Award from the Ancient Order of Hibernians in America during its 2026 National Convention in Omaha. The award recognizes organizations and individuals who exemplify a commitment to human dignity, compassion and service to others.
The recognition is especially meaningful because it bears the name of our founder, whose vision transformed countless lives and continues to shape our work today. Venerable Flanagan was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and a supporter of Irish independence, making this recognition a deeply personal connection to his legacy. Father Flanagan famously said, "There is no such thing as a bad boy," a belief rooted in the inherent worth and potential of every child. More than 100 years later, that philosophy remains at the heart of Boys Town's mission.
In presenting the award, the Ancient Order of Hibernians highlighted Boys Town's century-long commitment to advocating for children facing abandonment, poverty and neglect. The organization recognized the lasting impact of Father Flanagan's legacy and the continued dedication to serving children and families with compassion and care.
