Youth Stories

Last year, we introduced you to Sommer, a bright young woman whose parents would leave her alone for days on end. Many of you wanted to know how she was doing after graduating from Boys Town. I’m thrilled to say that the skills she learned at Boys Town experience prepared her well and she is thriving at college. Read her latest update.

-Father Boes

Hello! My name is Sommer Snakenberg and I am a proud to say I’m a 2012 Boys Town graduate. I’m now a sophomore at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and I love being in college! Starting school here last year after spending four years at the Village of Boys Town, Nebraska, was a big change for me and a big challenge. But I found that Boys Town was a blessing and gave me the skills and independence I needed to succeed.

I am majoring in psychology and find it really interesting. There are so many careers I could go into with this type of degree, but I have my sights set on one. I want to be a therapist for kids. I want to be able to help them and change their lives. That’s what Boys Town did for me, and I am eternally grateful for that.

So many people at Boys Town dedicate their lives to helping children heal from their hurts. I hope to someday come back to Boys Town and work there. There are so many hurting children that need attention and someone to talk to. It would be perfect, in my eyes, if I could go back to the place where my life started looking up and be the inspiration for kids who have faced so many difficulties in their lives.

Besides going to school, I work about 30 hours a week at a credit union. I’m also an active member of my sorority, Alpha Xi Delta, and I like to shop and read a good book when I have a free moment!

Boys Town is never too far from my thoughts. I find myself reliving memories and experiences from my days there. I visit Boys Town as often as I can to see my friends and the family I grew up with. I also go back home to visit my adopted family as often as I can. Thanks to Boys Town, my relationship with them is completely repaired.

All in all, I’d say my life after Boys Town is going pretty well. Of course, I couldn’t do it without the constant support Boys Town provides, and the prayers and generosity of donors everywhere who believe in Boys Town’s mission. For that, I am grateful every day.

-Sommer
