Help with Children Disrespecting Parents

Question:

My husband and I are really struggling with misbehaviors and disrespect from both our 11-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son. They do and say things like they want us to die or they hate us, throw things, punch doors, slam cupboards, and on and on. Please offer some advice because I keep wanting to just leave because I am so stressed. I can’t take this. I’m hurting.

We are glad you reached out today for support. It sounds like you are having a hard time coping with the behaviors your children are exhibiting. It can be hard to know how to address the things our kids are doing, especially when we feel like we have tried everything.

When your child does something like use a hurtful phrase or slam a door, it can be helpful to know what precipitated the behavior. Giving your child and yourself time to cool down before talking about what happened is important. Once you have had time to cool off, sit down with your child and talk through what happened to get to the root of their behavior.

This may be something that you have already tried; if so, we would like to talk to you more about what you are experiencing. Nebraska has the Family Helpline (1-888-866-8660) with trained professionals available to help parents 24 hours a day. They can talk with you about different strategies to try, or they can connect you with resources in the community if you feel you need more support.

It is also important that you also take care of yourself when you are going through a hard time. Make sure to set time aside each week to do something for yourself so you can feel rejuvenated and hopeful.

Thank you again for reaching out and best wishes.
