When Should I Allow My Child to Have His or Her Own Cell Phone?

View Transcript

The big issue with kids and technology is, first of all, you need to decide what is okay for kids to have. Are you going to let your 10 year old have a cell phone, for example? We'd suggest no. There's no good reason for that. On the other hand if you have a 13 year old who's out babysitting and in a home that has no landline, a cell phone is probably a good idea. Remember that kids don't have to have access all the time. It's a good idea to reel them out slowly. If you give your 13 year old a cell phone when she's babysitting then have her check it back in when the babysitting job is done. The more responsible your child is with the device, the longer your kid can have it and the more opportunities to use it. That way, they learn good habits with those things, and you don't have to worry so much.
