What is values-based vs goals-based parenting?

Values-based parenting is about parents getting in touch with those qualities and characteristics that they hope to see in their kids. It's that, in your heart-of-hearts, how do you hope your kids show up in the world?

The cool thing about focusing or coming from a values-based perspective versus a goal-based perspective, it's not that goals are a bad thing – they are actually helpful – but when you come from a values-based perspective, choices and possibilities start to open up more and you are a little freer in your parenting. So now, it's not just about getting the grade but what is it about the grade that matters in developing character in my kids and are there other ways I can make that happen, not just by getting the A?
