How Do I Talk to My Teen About What They Post Online?

View Transcript

I think there's no easy answer to this, except that there has to be communication. I think it's important for parents to model this behavior and also to have discussions about what an appropriate post looks like online. So, one conversation that I encourage parents to have is: "What's important about posting this", "What's the value in posting this", "What's the message that you have?" Instead of trying to look at it just from your perspective, I think we need to see how would other people interpret this. I think when you're having those conversations, one — you're reinforcing that your child can have an opinion and it's also a teachable moment to teach them how to express their values in an appropriate way that people can consume and understand where they're coming from.
