How do I reassure my child that they are safe in a crisis?

When a child is exposed to a crisis situation that the media is covering and they tell you that they are feeling unsafe, try to reassure them that everything is okay here at home. Also, talk to them about their feelings. Sometimes, children just need to be heard and they need their feelings to be acknowledged.

Instead of saying, "Oh no, you don't have to be afraid." You can say, "It's okay to feel afraid. What's making you feel afraid?" This is a good method to get them to start talking about their feelings and get them sorted out. Sometimes, after they share their feelings they won’t want to talk it anymore. At that time, you should let it go.
