In order to accept others, you have to be able to accept yourself. I think Maya Angelou said it best. "Be careful of a naked man offering you a shirt." In other words, you can't give what you don't have. If you can't learn to respect and accept yourself, you can't give that to others.
And so, how do parents teach children that? Well, by giving them a sense of well-being, a safety, and a self-worth. That comes in the smallest thing as giving children ​praise and encouragement, and being there for them. When children can accept themselves and respect themselves, they can respect others.
