Helping Children Cope with the Unexpected

  • Remember, everyone has built-in coping mechanisms to help get them through crises.
  • Let your children know it’s okay to feel sad, confused or afraid.
  • Be there to talk and listen to your children.
  • Return to normal routines as soon as possible.
  • Give your children time and space to process their feelings.
  • Keep an eye on your children’s behaviors, even months later.
  • Seek professional help if your child’s routines and behaviors don’t go back to “normal.”
