Boys Town New York youth participated in the third annual Holiday Hoopfest Tournament Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015. Over 75 youth from the Dean Street, Bergen Street, Bensonhurst and Sixth Avenue homes and staff attended the fun-filled basketball tournament.

The sponsor, Hunter College Hawks, and their men’s basketball head coach, Shay Berry, graciously opened the Hunter College SportsPlex gymnasium and helped with refereeing the games. Before the festivities of the games started, the Hunter College players and coaches led youth in warm-ups and stretch routines to loosen up and get adrenaline pumping. The tournament consisted of five teams in a tournament style format. Competing teams included Dean Street, Bergen Street, and a combination team of two Bensonhurst homes and one Sixth Avenue home.

After the two semi-final games, youth participated in a basketball clinic with the Hunter College players shooting basketballs, passing drills and learning different passing and shooting techniques.

When the clinic ended, the Dean Street boys played the combined teams of the Bensonhurst and Sixth Avenue boys, in a spirited final game. Dean Street emerged the victors 47 to 40. The Hoopfest youth M.V.P. was awarded to Dean Street youth, Devon T. Dean Street is now the three-time champion of the Holiday Hoopfest Tournament.

“After the game, all of the youth showed incredible sportsmanship, and shook hands and congratulated each other on a great competitive game,” said Renato Foz, Youth Activities Coordinator, Boys Town New York. “Even though Dean Street won the game, all of our youth ended up being the winners, as they got to experience playing in a college gymnasium, and participating in a fun event. The staff showed great support and encouragement to the youth as the games were being played. It went great, and we can’t wait for next year!”

Coach Berry invited all of the youth to come watch the Hunter Hawks basketball team play in February. “We are excited to reciprocate the love and support,” said Foz. “It was truly a special day and we hope Boys Town New York and Hunter College can be great partners for many more events to come. Thank you!”
