The SpartanNash Foundation Presents $10,000 Grant to Boys Town

The SpartanNash Foundation presented a $10,000 grant to Boys Town on Friday, Dec. 18, 2015, at the Elkhorn Family Fare Supermarket.

The grant will help underwrite the Boys Town youth garden, which supports the nonprofit organization’s mission of changing young people in body, mind and spirit. Each year, more than 200 youth gain new skills, produce healthy, fresh food for their households and learn to appreciate the value of service.

With the $10,000 grant, Boys Town will purchase supplies for the 2016 growing season—including gardening tools and seeds—and enable them to make 2016 another year of growth and productivity in the Village of Boys Town.

The Village of Boys Town is home to nearly 400 children and teens, many of whom have fled abuse or neglect in their own homes or have struggled with behavioral problems and are unable to live safely at home. Boys Town provides these young people with highly structured households led by live-in house parents who help them earn privileges and learn to accept consequences, attend school and get help with their homework at home and learn to get along with their peers.

“The Boys Town garden is a remarkable ‘learning laboratory’ which teaches the young residents invaluable skills around nutrition, agriculture, food preparation, and sustainable practices,” notes Meredith Gremel, VP, Corporate Affairs and Communications. “It also teaches a number of life skills related to hard work, commitment, teambuilding, and character development. The SpartanNash Foundation is proud to support this valuable service learning opportunity for Boys Town youth.”

Boys Town President and Executive Director Father Steven Boes expressed his gratitude, adding: “We are so thankful to SpartanNash and their Foundation for their generosity to help with this project that will enrich the lives of our children. We know this garden will be another great teaching tool for the youth in our program.”
