The Hunter Hawks helped with the Boys Town New York Holiday Hoopfest!

On December 27, 2013 youth from Boys Town New York’s Intervention and Assessment (I&A) Homes, and Non Secure Placement (N.S.P.) homes, participated in the second annual Holiday Hoopfest.

Former New York Knicks forward Hollis Copeland was on hand, as well as the Hunter College NCAA basketball team and head coaches, to help the boys with drills before the tournament began. The tournament was then refereed and coached by the Hunter College team.

The N.S.P. residents of the Bensonhurst and Park Slope, and I&A residents from Bergen Street and Dean Street Homes, battled on the court for the coveted trophy.

In the first round Park Slope was victorious with a 57-29 win over Bensonhurst. In the other bracket Dean Street secured the win 72-39 over Bergen Street.

In the championship game, Dean Street became two-time champions of the Holiday Hoopfest tournament after narrowly defeating Park Slope in a 64-52 victory.

After the championship game, Hollis Copeland presented the trophy and MVP Award to Dean Street.

“Staff in attendance did a great job encouraging the boys. We are very grateful to Hunter College Basketball Head Coach, Shay Berry, for bringing his players and coaches to help the tournament. We are also grateful for the attendance of Mr. Hollis Copeland for helping the kids refine their basketball skills,” said Renato Foz, Youth Activities Specialist at Boys Town New York.
