Boys Town Central Florida Student Recognized as Student of the Month

Student of the month Britney and teacher Mrs. Santana.

Britney first started living at Boys Town Central Florida in August 2014. In just a couple of months, she was recognized as Student of the Month at Jackson Heights Middle School for Outstanding Leadership for the month of November 2014. Nominated by her Reading Teacher, Mrs. Santana, Britney has shown great improvement since arriving.

“Mrs. Santana praises Britney for helping others in the class, taking a leadership role, encouraging others to try harder but especially for overcoming her own fears of reading,” said Camesa Irvin, Britney’s Family-Teacher. “She was chosen to speak at the annual Boys Town Christmas Lighting and Mrs. Santana was there supporting her and cheering her on.”

Britney has a GPA of 3.2 and continues to strive for more ways to improve and set a leading example in her class. “Britney’s mother passed away when she was just eight-years-old and she really looks up to Mrs. Santana as a mother figure and mentor,” explained Camesa. “Having her teacher guide her to overcome her fears of reading and being able to speak in front of others has been a great experience for Britney.”

She lives with four other youth in her group home at Boys Town and her two older brothers live close by in another group home. “Britney loves being able to be with her brothers as well as the new family she has made,” said Camesa. “She spends her free time singing, playing basketball, listening to music, and dancing (Britney and her brothers love to create dance routines together). She is on a positive path to success here at Boys Town and watching her growth makes us all very proud!”
