NBA Star Battier Talks Success and Keeping a Positive Mind Set

Former NBA Star and Duke University Blue Devil, Shane Battier, visited with Boys Town youth at Wegner School on Tuesday, May 5.

Battier, a six-time divisional winner of the NBA Sportsmanship Award, spoke to youth about staying positive and working hard in order to become successful. “Everyone has amazing potential to do great things,” said Battier. “That’s why the most important thing you must have, and what I try to do every single day, is have a positive attitude.”

After speaking with the Wegner School youth, it was their turn to fire questions at the ESPN College Basketball Analyst. Questions ranged from where he grew up, who he looked up to when he was a kid, and what his stats were like. The afternoon ended with youth giving Mr. Battier Boys Town memorabilia and thanking him for visiting Wegner School. Following the Wegner School event, Battier took time to speak with Boys Town coaches at the Palrang Fieldhouse.

Later that evening, Shane Battier headed to the Embassy Suites in LaVista where he headlined the 2015 Booster Banquet. Battier spoke to the audience about keeping your head up and staying positive in order to face adversity, noting that much like Father Flanagan, he too faced negative criticism on his path to success.

Along with Mr. Battier, guests heard from the Competing With Character award recipients Sam and Hayley. Both youth spoke about how Boys Town created a supportive environment that helped them achieve their dreams both in and outside of athletics.
