Boys Town Broadens Partnership with Omaha Mexican Consulate

On Wednesday, April 22, 2015, the Mexican Consulate in Omaha, which serves Nebraska and Iowa (MCO) together with Boys Town Nebraska/Iowa and the Law Firm of Dornan, Lustgarten & Troia PC, LLO inaugurated the “El Rincon de los Ninos” (The Kids’ Corner).

The MCO first approached Mariana Santa-Maria, Supervisor for the Common Sense Parenting ® (CSP) program of Boys Town Nebraska/Iowa to possibly explore and develop the project together. With support from Senior Director of Community Impact, Nick Juliano and his team, the MCO opened the first of its class kids’ area for any Mexican Consulate in the United States.

“The Mexican Consul, Guadalupe Sanchez-Salazar, stated that there are only three kids’ areas in all of the Mexican Consulates in the United States,” said Rafael Santa-Maria, Community Engagement Developer, Boys Town Nebraska/Iowa. “This is the first one that has a focus on education and literacy for young children; the Consul feels that while the children’s parents are waiting to get their documents at the Consulate, the children have a safe and calming place where they can keep busy learning something.

Boys Town helped with setting up the area and providing coloring and reading materials during the inaugeration.  The Family-Home of Jose and Laura Santa-Maria participated in putting together furniture for the El Rincon de los Niño, the Law firm coordinated volunteers that came to read and do activities for the children, and Boys Town took turns volunteering and collaborating with this endeavor.

"The collaboration with the Mexican Consulate has been ongoing for more than a couple of years. They have been allowing Boys Town’s CSP department staff to talk to parents about parenting skills while in their waiting area,” said Rafael. “This partnership is very important for Boys Town’s Community engagement efforts.”
