Melvin grew up in a challenging environment before coming to Boys Town in the mid-1950s. For him, Boys Town was more than a place to live. It was a foundation that prepared him for life.
After leaving Boys Town, Melvin and his brother both joined the military, seeking the structure and skills they had learned at home. While his brother found fulfillment in a small community, Melvin pursued a different path. He served nearly 13 years in the military and then went on to college. He credits Boys Town with giving him the education, guidance, and confidence to succeed.
“I could not have asked for a better education,” Melvin reflects. “Thanks to Boys Town, I finished with a B.S. degree in Computers. Lots of math, lots of thinking and planning. The military prepared me in many ways, but the math and English were all Boys Town.”
Melvin’s story is a powerful reminder that every child has potential. Sometimes all it takes is the right guidance and encouragement to find it. Boys Town provided that direction, helping him and countless others build confidence and achieve their goals.
“God has His own plans for us,” Melvin says. “We just have to have faith enough to follow those plans. I hope others understand and have faith that it will all work out. I came from a difficult environment before coming to Boys Town. What would my chances of success in life have been if I had not gone there? Only God knows.”
Melvin’s journey is a testament to the power of second chances. Boys Town gave him the tools to thrive. Today his story continues to inspire future generations of children to reach their full potential.
