Using the latest in MRI technology at Boys Town National Research Hospital®, we are able to safely study how children’s brains function and how they respond to different treatment interventions. This could lead to reducing or eliminating the need for medications.

Why research is Necessary

Current Studies

Maltreatment and Brain Development

We have identified at least two negative outcomes of maltreatment:
increased anxiety
increased impulsivity
We are now examining how interventions affect the regions of the brain involved in these outcomes and whether improvement in their functioning is linked to reduced anxiety/impulsive behavior.

Substance Abuse and Brain Development

Alcohol disrupts the development of regions of the brain involved in behavioral control and attention.

This disruption may be associated with reduced emotion regulation, which may increase the risk for youth to develop:
mood disorders
anxiety disorders
