The Well-Managed Classroom

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Section 1: Introduction - 1 ½ hours of instruction, activities, brainstorming and discussion

In this section, participants will learn the history of Girls and Boys Town Education Model, understand the concept of "School a Positive Culture", and discuss factors that affect the behavior of students, as well as learn the importance of students being connected to school.

Section 2: Preventing Problem Behavior - 3 ½ hours of instruction, readings, discussion, activities, and practical application

Participants will learn methods to proactively teach rules, procedures, consequences, and skills and to develop a plan for implementation in their classroom/building. They will also identify skill deficits by applying and task analyzing a skill that could be used in their classroom. Participants will practice and apply the various methods of Proactive Teaching.

Section 3: Encouraging Positive Behavior - 2 hour of instruction, discussion, activities and practical application

Participants will identify some of the possible negative outcomes of engaging in coercive patterns of behavior with students. They will learn to differentiate between three types of praise and how to identify when to use each type. They will also explore the use of effective positive consequences to shape a student's behavior. Participants will also practice and apply the various types of praise.

Section 4: Correcting Problem Behavior - 6 hours of instruction, discussion, activities and practical application

Participants will acquire various processes for correcting problem behavior along continuum of correction, teaching alternative behaviors, and using effective consequences. They will identify ways to manage the environment, oneself, and the student's learning during emotionally intense situations, as well as recognize possible outcomes when attempting to de-escalate a student's inappropriate behavior. Participants will practice and apply using corrective strategies.

Section 5: Implementation Plan - 1 hour of instruction and activities

Participants will identify strategies to use in their classroom/building and develop a specific plan for implementation.
