COURSE OBJECTIVES
Section 1: Introduction/Vision/Model of Prayer
In this section, you will discuss the traditions and values of Catholic schools. You will learn how the 21st Century Girls and Boys Town Education Model can match and enhance your vision. You will learn the Ecumenical Acts Model of Prayer that is used with Girls and Boys Town students. You will also learn how to replicate this activity in your classroom.
Section 2: Christian Living Skills and Critical Teaching Concepts
You will experience a guided image of a child's day. You will see how a balance between the head and heart provides consistency when working with students. You will identify Christian living skills that can enhance children's strengths and replace their weaknesses. You will learn how to task-analyze skills. You will be introduced to the ABC's of behavior, including how to deal with appropriate and inappropriate behavior. You will also learn how to build a Christian community by teaching the Ten Commandments, Beatitudes and character development. Critical teaching concepts, including specificity, rationales and other quality components will also be described.
Section 3: Proactive Teaching
You will learn the three types of proactive teaching: planned, pre-teaching and preventive prompt. You will work in a small group to make a lesson plan that introduces a Christian life skill and a preventive prompt to teach that skill. You will also present the outline of your lesson to the other groups and explore skills that set students up for success and build Christian community.
Section 4: Effective Praise
You will learn what Effective Praise is and how to use it. The step sequence for giving Effective Praise is also described.
Section 5: Effective Praise Group Activity
You will participate in guided and independent role-play to help you master Effective Praise.
Section 6: Corrective Teaching
You will learn how to teach alternative behavior and deliver effective consequences. Through role-play, you will master Corrective Teaching by learning the steps and procedures of the interaction.
Section 7: Corrective Teaching Group Activity
You will use role-play to reinforce the steps and skills involved in a corrective teaching interaction.
Section 8: Self-Control and Crisis Teaching
This section will help you identify stressors and develop coping mechanisms. You'll learn about the conflict cycle and the teaching tools you can use with students in crisis. You will also learn how to manage three important things when dealing with a crisis: yourself, the learning process and the environment.
Section 9: Crisis Teaching Group Activity
You will role-play and practice the skills and tools of Crisis Teaching.
Section 10: Implementation
You will share with the group your plan of action and set individual goals to build a caring community in the classroom and the school.
