School Discipline Assessment
Why We Do It
Each data collection technique provides valuable information:
- Focus groups and interviews allow students, teachers, parents and administrators to share their opinions about the school, providing rich and detailed information.
- Pencil and paper surveys completed by students, teachers, parents and administrators allow us to collect anonymous feedback on numerous topics.
- Classroom observations provide insight into classroom functioning from an outside observer and allow the observer to see classroom behavior and learning in context.
- Office referral data makes use of existing school records and provides a more complete picture of discipline procedures and trends in office referrals.
The assessment process involves a review of the overall trends in the data by examining patterns that occur across data collection methods. It is in combining the information from all sources and looking for patterns in the data that the most complete picture of a school is obtained.
HOW WE DO IT
While the schedule for each school discipline assessment is tailored to the needs of the individual school, Table 2 and 3 provide examples of what a two-day, on-site visit involves.
WHAT YOU GET
School discipline assessment reports are between 50 and 80 pages in length. The report includes an Executive Summary and Introduction, a summary of data collected through focus groups and interviews, classroom and school-wide observations, office referral data and opinion surveys. Each data collection process is presented in an individual section.
Two additional report sections, Trends and Points of Convergence/Divergence and Recommendations, provide the following: 1) a summary of findings based on data presented in prior report sections; and 2) goals and strategies for addressing issues raised in the assessment. Your school personnel can use the report to develop objectives that will be meaningful, measurable and specifically tailored to your school. Girls and Boys Town staff will assist with the development and measurement of objectives, if you so choose.
