Dealing With Bullying
One-Day Workshop

OVERVIEW

This workshop explores the myths, facts and effects of bullying in schools. Participants will learn why some kids use bullying behaviors and how it affects their victims and the overall climate of the school. Participants will also discover the important role that bystanders play in either encouraging or discouraging bullying behaviors. The goal of the workshop is to give participants and the entire school community proactive strategies, including how to teach important social skills, so school professionals can foster a safer environment in the learning community.

RATIO

1 trainer for up to 25 participants. Additional participants require additional trainers.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This workshop is designed specifically for administrators, teachers, counselors, social workers, parents, psychologists and other adults who work with youth in education settings.

WORKSHOP AGENDA

Section 1 Topics (approx 2 hours)

  • Re-define the concept of bullying for your school
  • Recognize the characteristics of bullies, victims and bystanders by exploring the myths, facts and effects of bullying

Section 2 Topics (approx 1 hours)

  • Identify sources of data on bullying and learn how to use data to drive implementation

Section 3 Topics (approx 3 hours)

  • Create clear rules, procedures, and behavior expectations to address bullying in your school - including “un-owned” areas such as restrooms and playgrounds.
  • Learn proactive strategies to teach social skills to bullies, victims and bystanders.
  • Learn how to implement class meetings and problem solving strategies.

Section 4 Topics (approx 1 hour)

  • Create an implementation plan to include students, staff, administrators and parents

Each participant will receive a workbook that is used during the workshop and a CD-ROM that includes:

  • Posters of each skill

  • Reproducible Surveys for Students, Staff and Parents
  • Home Contact Log
  • Student Behavior Tracking Form for Support Personnel
  • Class Meeting Agenda Form
  • Bullying Role-Play Scenarios
  • Lesson Plan for the Skill of “Reporting Bullying Behaviors

WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS WILL UNDERSTAND:

  • The Bullying Cycle and the characteristics of each role in the cycle
  • The role of students in the bullying cycle
  • How to collect, interpret, and use data to help solve the problem
  • How to run effective class meetings
  • How to Role-Play Bullying Scenarios during Class Meetings
  • How to assist students in developing skills/behaviors in bullying situations
  • Proven Problem Solving Methods (S.O.D.A. S./ P.O.P)
  • Sample lesson plan for teaching “Reporting Bullying Behaviors”
  • How to set up appropriate consequences and teach alternative behaviors

THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY WILL RECEIVE:

  • Strategies of a School Wide Intervention Program
  • Assessment and development of current rules/procedures and supervision
  • Help in identifying the “un-owned” areas in the school
  • Starter set of skills that relate to bullying
  • Instruction on how to survey students, teachers, and parents
  • Resources for current bullying information
  • Top 10 Implementation Strategies - Action Plan for School

PARENT NIGHT (optional)

Our trainers can be available to facilitate a parent meeting that will provide an overview This is available as an add-on service and is not available as a stand-alone training.

FOR CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

The same topics are discussed but with specialized content, including how the Ten Commandments, Beatitudes, Golden Rule and Bible Stories can be incorporated into prevention strategies.
