Administrative Intervention

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Section 1: Introduction
You will describe your office referral process and identify its strengths and weaknesses. You will begin to focus on the elements that should be included in discipline policy and the major components of an effective school-wide student management program.

Section 2: Skill Assessment and Shaping
You will learn how to conduct a functional analysis, and see why it is important when dealing with repeat offenders. You will also learn why teaching social skills to students is important and discover how to task-analyze skills to meet student needs.

Section 3: Observing and Describing Behavior
You will learn how, when talking to students, to describe and explain behavior in specific terms, avoiding vague, judgmental terminology that can cause undesirable behavior.

Section 4: Rationales
You will learn how to help students realize why it's important to engage in appropriate behavior. You will also learn how rationales can be used to help students internalize and generalize skills.

Section 5: Crisis Teaching
You will learn how to de-escalate aggressive behavior. Attention will be given to Nicholas Long's Conflict Cycle and your role in it. You will learn five teaching tools to help a student in crisis. You will also learn what the teacher's role should be in the office referral process and discuss how to obtain information from the referring teacher.

Section 6: Crisis Teaching Role-Play
You will participate in independent and evaluated role-play using the tools of crisis teaching.

Section 7: Teaching Self-Control
Teaching self-control is a process. You will learn the following: how to help students regain composure; how to present your behavior expectations; how to discuss the referral; and how to practice with your students accepting criticism and disagreeing appropriately.

Section 8: Teaching Self-Control Role-Play
You will role-play the teaching self-control process.

Section 9: Corrective Teaching
You will learn the components of the Corrective Teaching process.

Section 10: Corrective Teaching Role-Play
You will participate in role-play activities to help you master the Corrective Teaching process.

Section 11: Behavior Contracting and Data Collection
You will learn how to write an incident report, write a student behavior contract and complete an office intervention log. You will explore the use of meditation essays to help students reflect on their inappropriate behavior. You will also learn about data collection methods.

Section 12: Classroom Re-entry
You will learn how to set expectations for the teacher and the student when he or she returns to the classroom. The skill of apologizing will be discussed, including teaching students how to apologize to the teacher.
