Reading Is FAME^® Overview
A four-course reading intervention program

PREREQUISITE

Your school or program should offer Reading Is FAME as an elective course that students can participate in while completing their regular academic or vocational program. A commitment to providing administrative support for the program and financial resources for purchasing materials, including computer software and books, is necessary. In addition, you should be able to comply with specific scheduling and staffing requirements suggested by the Girls and Boys Town Reading Center.

Any program or school that meets the above criteria and wishes to implement Reading Is FAME must complete a contract for services. The contract requires that you purchase both training and follow-up consultation services prior to receiving a copy of the curriculum.

WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE

Consultation can be provided at the district, program, school or classroom level and involve administrators, educators and support staff.

• Identify students with reading difficulties and place them in the appropriate class
• Facilitate a variety of activities designed to capture students' attention and help them to read and to use reading to learn.
• Teach students to change the way they define success, focusing on how much they learn rather than how well they perform in comparison to others.
• Use a day-by-day plan to implement a developmental reading intervention.
• Identify the components that make up an effective reading program.
• Develop methods for identifying students' strengths and needs in reading and assessing their growth.
• Select and use assessments, computer software, word activities, young adult novels and collaborative reading assignments that are interesting, challenging and age-appropriate.
