COURSE OBJECTIVES

Section 1: Introduction

You will meet your trainer(s) and receive an overview of the workshop and training materials.

Section 2: Functional Social Behavior

You will review the teaching social skills philosophy, discuss the goal of social skill training, and become familiar with different social skills and the activities needed to perform the skills. You will also learn how to identify treatment skills as well as task-analyze new and difficult skills. The ABC Model and Functional Behavior Analysis will be introduced.

Section 3: Social Skills-Building for Difficult Youth Problems

In this section, you will learn how to identify and define difficult behavior problems. You will discuss typical treatment planning procedures and learn how to prioritize problem behavior and how to use the ABC Model (antecedent, behavior, consequence) to analyze youth behavior. You will also learn how to teach alternative skills and formulate treatment strategies that decrease and/or prevent problem behavior and reinforce appropriate behavior.

Section 4: Individual Teaching Techniques

You will learn critical teaching concepts such as praise, specificity, rationales, consequences, practice, relationship development and tolerances. You will learn how to utilize teaching interactions to teach a new skill systematically and at a neutral time, reinforce behaviors as they occur naturally, correct inappropriate behavior and teach alternative, appropriate behavior.

Section 5: Social Skills Training in Group Settings

In this final section, you will learn how to decide which social skills to teach and how to structure groups, prepare necessary materials and maintain a productive learning atmosphere.
