What do I do if my child wants to quit a sport?

Well, my stand on quitting a sport is that, again, that would be the last thing I would ever want my child to do. We always talk about finishing. You start the season - even if things are going bad and you're maybe not playing as much as you want or you're not playing the position that you want - we wanna make sure that you finish that season because what a life skill. Everything we do, we have to finish. We always want to teach finishing. So if my child - I would let them know ahead of time that that's not an option, that we're gonna finish the season.

And if you choose not to go out for that sport the next season, that's okay; That's your decision. But once you've started that sport, then we need to finish. And I think as adults we have to do everything we can to get that child through that. Quitting is not an option. And to go along with them and saying, "And hey, if you don't like it, quit." Because now you've set down a pattern. That now as I go through life, I don't like the job, I quit. And that's not a good thing. So we can use sports, even in the tough times when maybe we're not getting the full enjoyment out of sports that we wanted, to get that child to finish that season and then reward them. I know that every time I talk to a youth sporting group, the one thing I congratulate all of the youth on is finishing, because that's an important thing to do.
