Should I tell a child that everything is going to be OK even if I don't feel that way?

When a crisis happens, should you tell your child everything's going to be fine, even if you don't feel that way? Well, we don't advocate lying to kids, but remember, depending on the age of your child, your child will understand things or feel things different when he's five than he will when he's 15.

We do want to assure our kids that we love them, that we do everything that we can to keep them safe, and that we want to help them to learn ways to keep themselves safe. And we also want to remind them that ultimately most people in the world are good with good intentions. That just because a crisis or something bad happens doesn't mean that everything is always going to be terrible. So we want to remind them as well of their blessings and good things in life when a crisis happens. That's important.
