Over the summer, should I review what my kids learned during the previous school year in order to help them prepare for the new school year?

Many times kids look at summer like it's free time. It is time away from school and that is true but it really is important to keep them involved in academic tasks. It doesn't have to be overboard but encourage them to read books and have some academic time every day. Thirty minutes is enough. It is important because they lose about 30% of what they learned the previous year over the summer. The more you can keep them involved the better. Just sitting down and doing some flash cards or, as I said, reading a book. Do something that keeps their mind active and engaged in those kinds of activities.
