How Much Alone Time Is Too Much Alone Time?

View Transcript

You want to make sure that you and your child have really talked about what your family values are about dating. How far is too far for example and how far is far enough. You want to make sure your child is comfortable getting out of an uncomfortable situation. And you also want to make sure, in all things, that your kid has some balance.

If a teenage couple is always alone, is never with friends or never with family, that's really unhealthy because they're wrapping up their whole social life with each other. And then when the relationship ends, they may find that they've lost touch with friends or family or activities they used to enjoy.

So watch that balance, watch your child, and if your mom or dad gut tells you they're spending way too much time alone, start suggesting that they join you for family activities and that they invite other friends to be a part of it. If they resist that, you really need to have some deeper conversation about what their concerns are and maybe how serious it's getting.
