How important is it to have the kids involved in the preparation of dinner?

View Transcript

If your mom and dad and you are dragging yourself home after work and trying to get dinner done then involving your kids has a couple of benefits. First of all, it teaches kids some good skills for when they no longer live at home with you such as how to put together a meal and basic kitchen skills. It also makes the work a little lighter for you and it gives you additional time together to talk.

There are very few kids who don't enjoy being in the kitchen with their parents. There is something about doing a task together that tends to make adolescents particularly feel like they can open up a little bit more and chat and at the end of the day you also end up with a child who can, at 18, make his or her own dinner and that's not a bad thing
