How do I embrace having a child with ADHD or other behavioral disorder?

The first thing, I think, when working with parents over the years, I have noticed is just really coming to grips with the disorder and accepting that this is what my child has. Parents should get the support they need to be able to understand the disorder and be able to work with other people that would support them, because this is a life-long situation that they're facing.

So getting the proper support and understanding what the disorder is, it's not a life crippling thing. It's a part of who your child is, so you're not going cut that out of your kid. In fact, you should accept it and embrace, not only your child, but the disorder itself and make that work for your child.

If you have a kid who is always on the go, get them into things that always get them on the go, that are more kinesthetic and that will engage them more. I don't think we would have America if we didn't have ADHD. We get things done. I think it's important for us to be able to show our kids other people in the community that are famous and have this disorder and could be still productive and a credit to our society.
