Youth Sports: Character and Teamwork

Sports are a great way for kids to learn character and teamwork. But sports also can be rife with frustration, jealousy, anger and other raw emotions. When you throw in the unrealistic expectations or demands of a group of parents, the fun kids should be having playing together can easily turn into stress and pressure. When sports seem to be missing the mark for your child and your family, keep the following parenting tips in mind:

  • Do some sports pre-teaching. Talk about following the coach’s instructions, listening, playing well with others, playing with a lot of energy and being a team player.
  • Make all conversations with everyone involved (coaches, players and parents) positive, cooperative and respectful.
  • Be a positive role model by cheering on your child’s team, treating opponents and game officials with respect and volunteering to help out.
  • Talk with your child about how his or her sports activities are helping build confidence, character and responsibility.
  • Praise your child and give compliments frequently.
