Teaching How To Care For Others

A person of character cares about others. He or she is courteous and polite and is tolerant and accepting of differences. He or she respects the dignity, privacy and freedom of others.

Your child was not born with a self-image or specific character traits. These things are learned and acquired through life experiences that begin after birth. You must help your child understand what it means to care for others. You can start by modeling and teaching these do's and don'ts:

Do:

  • Show compassion and kindness
  • Show empathy and consideration
  • Be thankful and express gratitude for what others do for you
  • Forgive others

Don't:

  • Be mean, cruel or insensitive
  • Neglect those who need your help
  • Think only about yourself

Caring:

  • Be kind
  • Be compassionate and show you care
  • Express gratitude
  • Forgive others
  • Help people in need
