Boys Town New York Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Renegade, mustang, mosquito and tornado. What do these words have in common? Their roots, like 10,000 other words in the English language, come from the Spanish language - an undeniable influence on our U.S. culture.

In honor of this influence, and Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15), the youth at Boys Town New York flexed their thinking muscles by delving into Hispanic culture and learning about Latin American countries.

Youth from Bergan Street, Dean Street and Richmond Hill Assessment and Short-term Residential Homes, each researched an assigned Latin American country, cooked a native recipe, and presented their findings and culinary achievements to their peers.

“All of the youth displayed an unbelievable effort in completing their projects,” said Damian Kinsey, Boys Town Passages Academy Supervisor. “Besides building cultural knowledge, completing this project encouraged teamwork, relationship building, respect for other cultures and basic social skills.”
