Boys Town New England Youth Wins On and Off Court
After a few months at Boys Town New England and a rocky start, 15-year-old youth Russ has learned what it means to help others.
During his time at Boys Town New England, Russ has struggled to follow rules and faced the consequences for his actions. “Through it all, though, he has accepted responsibility for his behaviors and steadily progressed,” explains David Brock, Boys Town New England Family-Teacher. Now, he’s not only progressing, he’s grown passionate about helping others.
Russ, who plays for his high school basketball team, was asked by his coach to assist the Special Olympic Unified Basketball Team. The team, comprised of able-bodied athletes, like Russ, and Olympians, work together to compete at each game.
For Russ, it’s an opportunity to enhance his talents. “It is helping my basketball skills because I have to pass the ball and show people where to be during the game,” stated Russ.
The experience is teaching lessons which translate far beyond the court, too. Both he and the Olympians are helping each other in ways they’ll never forget. “Russ has showed great compassion for all the participants and really enjoys helping build the self-esteem and skills of the Olympians,” said Brock.
When it came time for the first game, Russ was supported by the Brock family, his high school basketball coach, as well as other Boys Town New England faculty.
“Everyone came up to me today and said how great or wonderful or proud of me they are,” shared Russ. “It felt good, but I want them to know I am not doing this for me, I want to help the other athletes.”
