Boys Town New England Blossoms Each Spring

Boys Town New England celebrated spring with new landscaping and much more May 11 thanks to the help of interns from Raytheon’s Engineering Leadership Development Program (ELDP).

As part of an annual project, the ELDP students took time from their studies to clean up the Bazarsky campus. Tasks they performed included: clearing and landscaping a natural rock stairway, re-mulching the playground area, clearing trees and shrubbery for a garden, and breaking down an old, crumbling stone wall.

"Although it's physical work, it’s something the interns enjoy and look forward to each year,” said Greg Rueb, Boys Town New England Facilities Management. The interns collected money to purchase plants, bulbs, shrubs and mulch that will be planted in a newly cleared area.

This garden area is to be commemorated to Beth Keough, an Assistant Family-Teacher who died last month in a car accident. “Our intention is to keep memories of Beth alive by planting flowering shrubs that bloom from springtime through the fall," said Bill Reardon, Boys Town New England Executive Director.

The volunteers’ generosity didn’t stop with landscaping, though. With the extra money raised, they purchased two bicycles for the children in the sibling-set home.

Raytheon, a defense and aerospace systems company located just across the street from Boys Town New England, has been a good neighbor and friend of Boys Town New England for many years. Each year since 2007, approximately 60 to 70 interns from the ELDP volunteer their services to help with the spring clean-up on the Bazarsky Campus. The students are required to complete community service for a non-profit organization prior to their graduation.
