CSP Blooms at Boys Town Nevada
Children and families taking part in Boys Town Nevada’s Common Sense Parenting® (CSP) program have experienced great success, with more than 300 families taking part in the program in 2011 alone!
During the six-week program, parents are taught logical strategies and easy-to-learn techniques that address issues of communication, discipline, decision making, relationships, self-control and school success. According to Boys Town Nevada CSP Coordinator, Lindsey Nelson, many parents have reported that the skills are easy to understand, they are becoming calmer parents and their kids are more motivated to listen to them.
“The classes are applicable to so many types of families,” said Nelson. “The skills that parents learn can be easily integrated into their homes to improve their children's behaviors and improve family relationships.”
Currently, Boys Town Nevada offers five to eight classes each month, in a variety of venues, including the Boys Town Nevada administrative office, local elementary and middle schools, a women and children's homeless shelter, Nellis Air Force Base and a men's parolee transitional living center.
Nelson and her team of 10 other CSP trainers, including three who are bilingual, teach all of the classes. According to Nelson, there is a large Spanish-speaking population in the Las Vegas area, creating the need for these classes to be offered in Spanish, as well as English. Fifteen percent of the parents who graduated the program in 2011 were Spanish-speaking.
“Next year, my hope is to expand in the community by offering classes at more schools, community centers and churches, as well as increase referrals from the department of family services and juvenile justice system,” said Nelson.
