Lincoln, Neb., Native Sean Harris Elected 110th Mayor of Boys Town
Boys Town youth today elected Sean Harris of Lincoln, Neb., the 110th mayor of the Village of Boys Town, Neb. Kahli Fernandez of Belle Glade, Fla., was elected vice mayor.
Sean Harris is 16-years-old and says he wants to make Boys Town a better place. “I want to be a representative of Boys Town and a good leader,” says Harris.
Harris has been a resident of Boys Town for one year. He has played varsity football and baseball. Harris won student of the quarter three times and following graduation, plans to attend college and major in politics or history. Harris’ Family-Teachers are Chris and Carolyn Haack.
Fernandez is involved in JROTC and will serve as Cadet Corps Commander next year. Following graduation, Fernandez plans to attend college and major in drama or psychology. Her Family-Teachers are Bryan and Brandy Baumgart.
Father Edward J. Flanagan conceived the self-government system at the Village of Boys Town in 1926 as a tool for its citizens to build character, citizenship and a sense of community. The process was made famous in the 1938 Academy Award-winning movie “Boys Town,” where Mickey Rooney portrayed Whitey Marsh, a tough young boy who turns his life around and becomes Mayor of Boys Town.
