Boys Town Central Florida Youth has Experience of a Lifetime
Bright and early Sunday, September 17, 2010 Boys Town Central Florida youth, Johnny, and his Family-Teacher, Chad Patten, headed to Reunions Resort and Golf Course for the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation’s Championship for Charity Golf Tournament.
Johnny, having never seen a golf course before, described the course as “the Sahara Desert if it were green.” But Johnny and Chad didn’t head to the golf course for an early morning round of golf - they were there to represent Boys Town Central Florida.
The Orlando Magic Youth Foundation, which raises thousands of dollars for youth organizations around the area, gave $25,000 to Boys Town Central Florida in January. “Each organization that received a donation was represented at the event by volunteers like Johnny and Chad,” explained Terry Knox, Boys Town Central Florida Development Director.
Johnny and Chad helped gather golfers together for pre-tournament games and activities, and later went around wishing the golfers good luck.
Johnny’s day became even more memorable when he met former Orlando Magic player Bo Outlaw, who gave him some great advice. “People may steal from you and cheat you in life,” said Outlaw. “But they can’t steal your education, and they can’t cheat you out of your knowledge. So don’t just stay in school, learn something in school and use what you learn to succeed.”
Johnny, who will be attending college this year, was grateful for the advice - and the experience. “I had a wonderful time at the event, said Johnny. “To meet Bo Outlaw was just really amazing.”
