When Michae and Quintell Allen became Boys Town Central Florida Family-Teachers in December 2007, they put their dedication to helping children into practice.

“My wife and I have always known about Boys Town and the work they do to help children,” said Michae. “We wanted to work for an organization that has a commitment to helping youth, so becoming Family-Teachers sounded like a perfect match for us.”

Michae, who was in the process of becoming an English teacher before joining Boys Town, thought becoming a Family-Teacher would be an excellent opportunity to positively influence children. “I have always wanted to be a teacher,” said Michae. “Becoming a Family-Teacher, was an opportunity for me to teach youth important life and social skills.”

As Family-Teachers, the Allens help six at-risk boys ages 10 to 18 learn valuable skills and values. “A lot of our children have never experienced a healthy home environment,” said Quintell. “We teach our youth the value of doing good things, thinking things through and the difference between right and wrong.”

The Allens create this healthy home environment for their youth by doing activities together as a family, such as watching movies and playing board games and basketball.

The boys in their home also get to play the role of big brother to the Allen’s five-month-year-old daughter, Jael. “Having a child of our own is an added benefit,” said Michae. “This is a great opportunity for our youth to interact with an infant and see how a healthy family operates.”

The Allens most enjoy seeing their Boys Town Central Florida youth put the skills they have taught into action. “The most rewarding part of this job is knowing I am doing something good and helping youth,” said Quintell. “When I see our children understanding something we taught them, there is no greater feeling.”
