Corners Contribute to Mission

A Thursday night church service was the start of a new opportunity for Boys Town Home Campus Family-Teachers Jerry and Kizzie Corner.

Jerry, originally from Wichita, Kan., first met Omaha, Neb., native Kizzie at Crossroads Mall while studying at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. After marrying in 2001, the Corners started their family right away with the birth of their son Ja’Lyn.

It wasn’t until after talking to Windel Davis, Boys Town Recruitment and Records Manager, during the church service that the Corners thought about becoming Family-Teachers. Understanding that the Boys Town Model is all about family-style living, the Corners were confident in themselves and their family, and signed on to be a part of the Boys Town family not long after.

“We felt like we could certainly help after talking to Windel,” said Jerry. “We both have the heart, mind and compassion to work with these kids and to do our part to contribute.”

The Corners have been contributing to Boys Town’s mission for the past five years, helping boys develop the family life they’ve been missing. Participating in campus wide activities, the Corners also created a few of their own traditions.

“Every Thursday we have movie night in our home,” said Jerry. “A house vote decides which movie and we all just relax and hang out with one another. Ice cream is another weekly event at our house. If the guys don’t earn any negative homework referrals, we take them out for ice cream to celebrate the good work they’ve done.”

Jerry and Kizzie currently care for eight boys in their home, as well as their 6-year-old son, Ja’Lyn, and 19-month-old daughter, Kemiah.  Family-Teaching is a challenge, but the Corners say they enjoy working for Boys Town.

“It’s been a wonderful experience and I’ve learned a lot about myself and how to work with others through being a Family-Teacher,” explains Jerry. “We hope we can continue to contribute to Boys Town in the years to come.”
