Boys Town California Begins CSP

Since June 6, 2011, Boys Town California has proudly been a provider of the Common Sense Parenting® (CSP) program. In just over six months, the site taught numerous parents, serving 89 children in the process.

During the six-week program, parents are taught logical strategies and easy-to-learn techniques that address issues of communication, discipline, decision making, relationships, self-control and school success. According to Boys Town California In-Home Family Services Coordinator Deborah Mathy, the parents love the classes and have said the trainers help them tremendously to internalize and generalize the skills.

“The trainers have experience in different programs at Boys Town, making their feedback and input valuable to those attending the classes,” said Mathy. “Classes are successful because the trainers are taking a genuine interest in those attending the class and are individualizing it as much as possible.”

The CSP program has also been successful at Boys Town California thanks to its new resource room, “Our Town.” There, parents in CSP classes have access to food and basic needs items for their families.

Currently, Boys Town California is offering two classes every six weeks at its administrative offices. The classes are also taught as needed at community locations, such as preschools. The site has been receiving more referrals with time because of all the positive feedback social workers and community resources have been receiving from graduates of CSP.
