Hot Night Brings Cool Experience for South Florida Youth
When 11-year-old Joamel stepped up to the plate Sept. 2 at Roger Dean Stadium in Palm Beach, Fla., he felt the heat. And the scorching temperatures weren’t the only reason why.
Joamel knew his honorary first pitch of the game not only represented his own success as a Boys Town South Florida youth, but the successes of hundreds of children and families served by the organization.
“We had lots of families there cheering him on and showing their support,” said Amy Simpson, Boys Town South Florida Site Director. “Joamel did a great job representing Boys Town both on and off the field.”
Hometown fans attended Boys Town South Florida Day at Roger Dean Stadium, the last game of the season between the Jupiter Hammerheads and the Palm Beach Cardinals. They watched as the Cardinals beat the Hammerheads by a single run, and learned how Boys Town’s Family-Based Services helps families find the help they need.

“We are grateful to Roger Dean Stadium for the opportunity to tell more people about the programs we offer South Florida families, and for all those who support our mission to Change the Way South Florida Cares for Her Children and Families,” said Simpson.
Fans at the game were able to help kids and families served by the organization by filling out special forms when making purchases 10 percent of the proceeds then went to Boys Town South Florida.
“It was a great day for all our children and families,” said Noemi Coltea, Boys Town South Florida Development Director. “You just can’t beat Labor Day at the ball park with friends and family.”
By the way, Joamel’s pitch sailed right over home plate.
